Developing a series – 5 day retreat

The Paint Spot Edmonton, Alberta

July 17 – 21 10 am – 1 pm

Join Samantha Williams-Chapelsky for a weeklong retreat where we will discuss developing a small, cohesive series of works that all pertain to one concept or idea.

Through discussions, research, and working on studies in a sketchbook, artists will create a small series of artworks that have a common theme, style, and could be continued on to be a strong portfolio of works or gallery submission.

The outcome will be to create 3 – 5 12 x 12” paintings that belong in a series of developing works.

Retreat Schedule:

  • Day 1: Slideshow, art talk, demonstration, research, and sketchbook exercises
  • Day 2: Sketchbook day – developing a working set of sketches and deciding on a color palette
  • Day 3: Paint, demo, challenge mini to loosen up!
  • Day 4: Paint, demo, challenge mini to loosen up and critique
  • Day 5: Finish, Tips on finishing, continuing series and varnishing/finishing touches

Join GOLDEN Artist Samantha Williams-Chapelsky for an informative GOLDEN lecture and demo!

This lecture and demo covers a wide variety of tools and techniques for use in Mixed Media projects. Learn about the wide range of GOLDEN Acrylic paints and mediums, as well as QoR Watercolour, giving you a good understanding of each product and their different attributes. Learn how to make the right choices in grounds and colours for the best intended application and for archival quality. Learn what to put under paint, and how to create washes, stains, and collage.

Samantha will also cover the use of stencils, paint markers, pastels, and pencils, as well as the creation of encaustic-like effects, and how to use Iridescent and Interference colours to add unique qualities to your work. This is a great place for beginners and experienced artists alike to learn new techniques and be inspired by innovative applications. Attendees will receive a selection of the products discussed to take home and explore the breadth and depth of GOLDEN’s professional product line.

Using the Golden Samples provided by Samantha and the materials on the supply list, artists will make 4 small mixed media artworks. This class is for artists with some experience with acrylics but looking to expand their knowledge base on some of the products listed. Samantha will cover how to create an image transfer project, low relief painting with Golden textures, a unique ground effect for a landscape painting, and incorporate stencils with Golden Pastes. Join us for a morning of exploration and experimentation!

Golden Lecture Demo – Smooth and Textured Surfaces

Join this 1.5 hour lecture on the various Golden Artist Colors products that can add unique finishes and textured paint applications to your work. We will cover Grounds, Gels and Pastes in the Golden line up, their effects, application techniques and the products that can be used with them to create unique effects in your works of art. We will start with smooth applications of products such as Grounds to create the perfect surfaces for mixed media works, pastels, pencils and conte. Then we will delve into Gels as both extenders, texture makers and even top coats. Finally we will talk about my ever favorite products, the Paste line up including a variety of Molding paste application techniques, paper like effects and volume!

This lecture is offered free of charge and participants in Canada and the United States will receive a free sample pack of Golden products via mail direct from the Golden Artist Colors Factory.

Abstracting the natural landscape

Landscape artists will have the opportunity to explore the realm of semi abstract and abstract. We will use color and texture to define a space, simplifying it into its basic components and challenging the norms of traditional landscape painting. Students will learn to use composition cleverly to create the illusion of more, and use color to define space.
